Overview
Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is a charming perennial herb treasured for its delicate white flowers, sweet apple-like fragrance, and calming properties. Unlike German Chamomile, Roman Chamomile spreads to form a soft carpet of aromatic foliage, making it ideal as a ground cover, border plant, or container herb. Its flowers are commonly harvested for herbal tea, while the fragrant foliage adds beauty and aroma to any garden. The flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, helping improve biodiversity in the home garden. Roman Chamomile thrives in full sun, prefers well-drained soil, and requires only moderate watering once established. It is an excellent choice for herb gardens, edible flower gardens, and gardeners seeking a beautiful, low-maintenance perennial herb.

Chamomile Seeds - Roman — growing guide
- 1
Prepare the Growing Medium
Fill a seed tray or small pots with a fine, well-drained seed-starting mix. Moisten the growing medium evenly before sowing, but do not leave it waterlogged.
- 2
Sow the Seeds
Sprinkle the tiny seeds evenly over the surface of the growing medium. Press them gently into place without covering them deeply, as chamomile seeds need light to germinate.
- 3
Keep Moist and Bright
Place the tray in a bright location with indirect light. Keep the surface consistently moist by misting gently. Avoid strong water pressure, which can displace the tiny seeds.
- 4
Care for the Seedlings
Seeds usually germinate within 7–21 days. Once seedlings appear, provide bright light and good airflow. Water carefully and allow the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.
- 5
Thin or Transplant
When seedlings have several true leaves, thin crowded plants or transplant them carefully into individual pots or the garden. Space plants about 20–30 cm apart.
- 6
Grow and Harvest Flowers
Grow Roman Chamomile in full sun to partial shade and keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Harvest fully opened flowers in the morning after the dew has dried. Use them fresh or dry them for herbal tea.
Plant care
Watering
Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged
Fertilizing
Apply compost or vermicompost before planting to enrich the soil. Feed every 3–4 weeks with a balanced organic fertilizer or diluted seaweed extract. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
Harvesting
Harvest fully opened flowers in the morning after the dew has dried. Pick flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming. Flowers can be used fresh or dried for herbal tea, culinary use, and natural skincare products.
