Wild Arugula

Plant overview
Wild Arugula (Diplotaxis tenuifolia), also known as Wild Rocket, is a leafy vegetable in the Brassicaceae family. Compared with common garden arugula, it generally produces narrower, more deeply lobed leaves with a stronger peppery flavor. It is well suited to home gardens because the leaves can be harvested repeatedly using a cut-and-come-again method. Pick individual outer leaves as needed while leaving the center of the plant to continue growing. Wild arugula prefers cooler growing conditions and good light. In Thailand, it performs especially well during the cooler months. During hot periods, morning sun with protection from strong afternoon heat can help maintain better leaf quality and reduce stress. The leaves are excellent fresh in salads, sandwiches and wraps, and can also be added to pizza, pasta, pesto and other dishes. Regular harvesting encourages fresh new growth and provides a convenient supply of flavorful greens at home.

Seed starting
Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in moist, well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged. Seeds usually germinate in about 5–10 days. Once seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light and good airflow to encourage compact, healthy growth.
Transplanting
Transplant seedlings when they have developed 2–3 true leaves and are strong enough to handle. Move them carefully to their final container or garden bed without disturbing the roots excessively. Space plants about 6–8 inches apart, water thoroughly after transplanting, and provide temporary protection from strong afternoon sun while they establish.
Sunlight
Wild arugula grows best with 4–6 hours of sunlight per day. In Thailand, morning sun is ideal, especially during hot weather. During the hottest months, provide partial shade or protection from strong afternoon sun to reduce heat stress and help keep the leaves tender.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top layer of soil begins to feel slightly dry. Container-grown plants may need more frequent watering during hot or windy weather. Water near the base of the plant and ensure excess water can drain freely.
Soil & growing medium
Grow in loose, fertile and well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. A good container mix can include quality potting soil or peat moss combined with compost and a drainage material such as perlite. Avoid heavy, compacted soil that stays wet for long periods.
Fertilizing
Wild arugula does not require heavy feeding. Before planting, enrich the soil with compost or other well-decomposed organic matter. For container-grown plants, apply a mild balanced or nitrogen-rich liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks at a diluted rate to support healthy leafy growth. Avoid overfertilizing, as excessive feeding can produce overly soft growth and is unnecessary for good harvests.
Harvesting
Baby leaves can usually be harvested about 30–40 days after sowing, with larger mature leaves following later. For continuous harvests, pick the outer leaves individually and leave the center of the plant intact so new leaves can continue growing. Harvest regularly while the leaves are young and tender for the best flavor. During hot weather, harvest in the morning when the leaves are cool and crisp. Regular cutting also helps delay flowering and encourages fresh new growth.
