Plant overview
Vates Blue Scotch Curled Kale is an easy-to-grow leafy vegetable that performs well in fertile, well-drained soil with regular watering and full sun. It produces tender, nutritious leaves that can be harvested continuously for several months.
Climate & growing season
Best in cool season; suitable throughout Thailand with proper care.
Seed starting
Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in seed trays or directly into the garden. Keep the soil moist until germination, which usually occurs within 5–10 days.
Transplanting
Transplant seedlings when they have 2–3 true leaves. Water well after transplanting and avoid disturbing the roots.
Sunlight
Grow in full sun (6–8 hours daily) for the best growth and leaf production. In hot tropical climates, providing light afternoon shade can help prevent heat stress and improve leaf quality.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply whenever the top 2–3 cm of soil begins to dry. Mulching helps retain soil moisture.
Soil & growing medium
Kale grows best in fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Improve poor soil by adding compost before planting.
Fertilizing
Apply compost before planting and feed with a balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks. Avoid excessive nitrogen to maintain balanced growth.
Harvesting
Harvest the outer leaves first when they reach a usable size. Leave the center growing point intact to encourage continuous leaf production.
Harvest checklist
Print or tick off as you go.
