Plant overview

Red Burgundy Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is a warm-season vegetable valued for its distinctive burgundy-red pods, attractive plants and edible harvest. It thrives in hot, sunny conditions, making it well suited to Thailand. Plants grow best in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture and plenty of sunlight. Harvest the pods while they are young and tender, because mature pods quickly become tough and fibrous. Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to continue flowering and producing new pods.

Climate & growing season

Best suited to warm to hot growing conditions with plenty of direct sunlight. Red Burgundy Okra thrives in heat and performs best when temperatures remain consistently warm. It is sensitive to cold and grows slowly in cool conditions. Good drainage and consistent moisture support healthy growth and pod production.

Seed starting

Sow seeds about 1/2–1 inch deep in moist, well-drained soil or seed-starting mix. For faster germination, soak seeds in room-temperature water for 8–12 hours before sowing. Keep the medium warm and evenly moist but not waterlogged. Seeds usually germinate in about 5–10 days under warm conditions.

Transplanting

Okra prefers minimal root disturbance, so direct sowing is often easiest. If starting seedlings in trays or pots, transplant them while young after they have developed several true leaves. Move the root ball carefully without disturbing the roots, water thoroughly after planting and transplant during the cooler part of the day.

Sunlight

Red Burgundy Okra grows best in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Strong sunlight encourages sturdy growth, abundant flowering and good pod production. It handles Thailand's hot, sunny conditions very well.

Watering

Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and pod production. Allow the top layer of soil to begin drying before watering again. Established plants tolerate short dry periods, but prolonged or irregular watering can reduce pod quality and production. Avoid waterlogged soil.

Soil & growing medium

Grow Red Burgundy Okra in fertile, loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. A soil pH around 6.0–7.0 is ideal. Mix compost or well-decomposed organic matter into the soil before planting to support healthy growth while maintaining good drainage.

Fertilizing

Mix compost or well-decomposed organic matter into the soil before planting. During growth, apply a balanced fertilizer moderately as needed. Once flowering and pod production begin, avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers and pods. Container-grown plants may need more regular feeding.

Harvesting

Harvest Red Burgundy Okra pods while they are young, tender and easy to cut, usually when about 3–5 inches long. During warm weather, check plants every 1–2 days because pods can become tough and fibrous quickly. Cut pods with clean scissors or pruning shears rather than pulling them from the plant. Frequent harvesting encourages continued flowering and pod production.
