Plant overview
Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea) is a vigorous tropical climbing plant that thrives in Thailand's warm climate. It produces distinctive blue flowers that can be harvested regularly for fresh use or drying. The vine grows quickly and benefits from a trellis, fence or other support. It prefers plenty of sunlight, well-drained soil and regular watering while young. Once established, it is relatively easy to maintain and can flower for an extended period in warm conditions.
Climate & growing season
Tropical and warm climate; thrives at about 24–32°C. Very well suited to Thailand and can grow year-round with plenty of sunlight, good drainage and adequate water.
Thrives in Thailand's hot humid climate. Full sun and warm nights above 20°C.
Seed starting
For faster germination, lightly scarify the hard seed coat or soak seeds in warm water for 8–12 hours before sowing. Sow about 1/2 inch deep in moist, well-drained seed-starting mix. Keep warm and evenly moist but not waterlogged. Seeds usually germinate in about 7–14 days.
Transplanting
Transplant seedlings when they have several true leaves and are strong enough to handle. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil and place the plant near a trellis, fence or other support. Water thoroughly after transplanting and guide the young vine onto its support as it begins to grow.
Sunlight
Butterfly Pea grows and flowers best in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. More sunlight generally encourages heavier flowering. In extremely hot locations, light afternoon shade can help reduce heat stress.
Watering
Water regularly while plants are young to help establish strong roots. Once established, Butterfly Pea is fairly drought tolerant, but regular watering encourages healthy growth and more flowers. Allow excess water to drain and avoid constantly waterlogged soil.
Soil & growing medium
Butterfly Pea adapts to many soil types but grows best in loose, well-drained soil with some organic matter. As a legume, it can form a beneficial relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, so very rich or heavily fertilized soil is usually unnecessary.
Fertilizing
Butterfly Pea generally needs only light feeding. Add compost or organic matter when planting, then use a balanced or low-nitrogen fertilizer sparingly during active growth if needed. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of flowering.
Harvesting
Harvest Butterfly Pea flowers when they are fully open, preferably in the morning after any dew has dried. Pick flowers gently by hand without damaging new buds or vines. Harvest regularly to encourage continued flowering. For drying, choose clean, healthy flowers and dry them soon after harvesting in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Store only when completely dry.
Pests & diseases
Aphids occasionally. Spray with neem oil. Very disease-resistant.
